The Eredivisie (also called Honour Division or Premier Division) is the highest echelon of the Dutch football. Professional football in the Netherlands began in 1954, and in 1956 the Eredivisie was founded. In the 2018/19 season, it was ranked 11th by UEFA in the list of the best leagues in Europe. Administered by the Royal Netherlands Football Association.

It consists of 18 clubs, each of which meets with each other team twice - once as a host, once as a guest. At the end of the season, the club at the bottom of the league was eliminated in the second level of the Dutch football system - Oerstedivisie (First Division). And the champion from Oerstevizi automatically switches to Eredivisie. The next two teams at the bottom of the table play playoffs for relegation / promotion with eight of the highest ranked clubs in Oerstedivisie.

Participation in the Europa League is determined by playoffs between the graduates of 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th place.

The Eredivisie winner wins the Dutch national championship. Ajax (33) has the most national titles, followed by PSV Eindhoven (24), followed by Feyenoord (15). Since 1956, these three teams, known as the "Big Three" of Dutch football, have won all but one of the Eredivisie titles.

In the period 1990-1999, the league was officially called PTT Telecompetitis (named after its sponsor PTT Telecom), and in 1999 it was called KPN Competitisi, and the following year it was renamed KPN Eredivisie. In the period 2002-2005 it was called Holland Casino Eredivisie, and after the 2005/06 season the division was sponsored by Lottery, but the name of the sponsor was not added to the name of the division due to legal reasons.
