FC Utrecht is a professional football team based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1970 and welcomes visiting teams at the Galgenwaard Stadium. It is known by the nicknames "Cathedral citizens" and "Cupfighters".

Its creation became a fact after the merger of three teams from the same city - Velox, DOS and Elinkwijk. In the 80's the club got a chance to play in the UEFA Cup several times, but after 1991 they have spent 10 years off the stage of European football.

FC Utrecht have become champions once (as DOS) and have won the "KNVB Cup" Dutch Cup 3 times. It also once won the Dutch Super Cup (Johan Cruijff Schaal).

It is also the only team outside the Big Three (Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven) that has not been relegated from the Dutch Premier League, the Eredivisie.

In 2008, it became clear that Van Seumeren, owner of Mammoet logistics, became the owner of 51% of the team's shares. FC Utrecht becomes the second team in the country (after AZ Alkmaar), managed by investors. Later, the team's management stated that thanks to the money received through the sale of these shares, there will be more investment in the club's youth schools, as well as for recruiting new players. In addition, the intention of the board was to lead the club to the top five of the Eredivisie.

Utrecht (in its current form) first competed in the European Club Championship in 1980, playing for the UEFA Cup. Since then, the team has played in 14 UEFA tournaments, and its best achievements are reaching the group stage of the UEFA Cup 2004/05 and the Europa League 2010/11.
