The Belgian First Division A (or Jupiler Pro League) is the highest level in professional football in Belgium. 18 Clubs play in it, and the league itself operates on the principle of promotion/relegation. The season lasts from August till April. Before the 2009/10 season, 18 teams participated in the league, but then the number was reduced to 16, and this type of system was introduced. The first playoff group includes from the first to the eight team in the ranking. The second playoff group includes the teams ranked from 9th to 16th place. The 18th placed team is relegated directly to Belgian First Division B. The seventeenth placed club will have a chance for promotion/relegation play-off against 2nd placed in Division B.

The division was established in 1895 and is part of the UEFA Confederation. In the league every season each club playing each other twice - as a host and as a guest. 34 rounds are played, and there are 9 matches in each round. After these 30 rounds, the regular season ends and then the playoff phase begins. After the matches of the first playoff group, the one who ranks first wins the national championship. The second team wins a chance to play in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The team in 3rd place plays in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

The RSK Anderlecht team won the most championship titles (34 in total). Three other teams have won 10 or more titles - Club Brugge (15), Union Saint Gilloise (11) and Standard Liege (10). Belgian clubs have to put one star on their team for every 10 titles they win.
