La Liga (also known as the Primera Division) is the highest division of professional football in Spain. The dominant teams in this league since the 1950s are Real Madrid (they have won 33 titles) and Barcelona (they have won 24 titles). In addition, the league has been won by Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Valencia, Real Betis, Sevilla and Deportivo La Coruna. The championship is considered one of the strongest football leagues in Europe.

The league format is the usual double round system. The season is from August to May and during this time each team plays twice with each club, once at home and once as a guest. The victory brings the teams 3 points, one point is awarded for a draw, and no points are awarded for a loss. The teams are ranked according to the total number of points, with the club with the most points at the end of the season becoming champion.

There is a system for moving to a higher league and relegation to a lower league between the Primera Division and the Second Division. The three teams with the lowest number of points in La Liga are transferred to the Second Division, and the two teams with the most points in the Second Division move to La Liga. Additionally, in the Second Division, playoffs are played between the teams in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place, and the winner of them also gets promoted to the Primera Division.

The top 4 teams in the Primera Division qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League next season. The fifth team in the standings qualifies for the group stage of the Europa League. And the sixth team qualifies for the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
