Football Club Gelsenkirchen - Schalke 04, abbreviated Schalke 04, is a sports club in the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The numbers "04" in the name of the team come from the year of its creation - 1904. It bears the nicknames "royal blue" and "miners". The club plays their home games at Feltins Arena. TThe third largest sports club in the country and fifth in the world, with many other sports departments besides football.

The football team has won the national championship 7 times (and in other 9 seasons has remained in second place), has won the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) 5 times. Also won the German Cooper Cup and the UEFA Cup. They were the first club in the country to win a double (in 1935) - became champions and won the cup.

Proud participant on one of the classic derbies in the country - the one against Borussia Dortmund, also called the Ruhr derby.

It was founded in the mining village of Schalke and its nickname "miners" comes from the fact that most of the founders, footballers and spectators worked in the mines. After the end of the First World War, it merged with the Schalker Tourferein Gymnastics Association 1877 and changed its name to the Schalke Gymnastics and Sports Association 1877, adopted its current name in 1924.

In 1963 they were accepted into the newly formed First Bundesliga and played in it until 1992. The club won its most convincing victory in 1976, when they defeated Bayern Munich 7:0. In the following periods, there were both ups and downs (even winning the UEFA Cup in 1997). And in the 2010/11 season they have managed to reach the semifinals of the Champions League.
