Stitching Betaald Voetbal Excelsior, or simply SBV Excelsior, is a Dutch professional football team from Rotterdam. It was founded in 1902 and plays home games at Van Donge & De Roo Stadion Rotterdam. The greatest successes were the five championship titles of the Erste Division (First Division, second level of professional Dutch football) and reaching the final for the Dutch Cup (KNVB Cup) in 1929/30.
Football was still an elite sport in the early 20th century, but Excelsior became one of the first working-class teams in the Netherlands. In 1945/46 came their first success, reaching promotion to Eerste Divisie (First Division), which was the highest level of Dutch football before the introduction of professional football in 1954. They dropped out the following season, but managed to return in the 1951/52. After the introduction of professional football, Excelsior won Eerste Divisie three times and respectively played in the Eredivisie a fwe times, but never stayed there for long.
In 1996, a formal partnership was signed between the two Rotterdam clubs - Feyenoord and Excelsior. Excelsior became Feyenoord's supporting club and provided experience and training to Feyenoord's young talented players. Later, the partnership became even more extensive, but the majority of Excelsior fans were against a partnership with Feyenoord, because they thought that their favorite club simply did not exist.
In 2010, Excelsior returned to the Eredivisie. In the 2010/11 season, they made a flying start, earning 10 points in their first five games, including a home win in the Rotterdam Derby against Feyenoord. But that didn't help and in the end the team remained in 16th place, so they had to play playoffs for promotion/relegation and managed to secure another season in the Eredivisie. There was a relegation in 2011/12, but in 2014 the club returned to the elite of the Dutch football.
