Serie A is the top-tier professional football division in Italy. From 1898 to 1929 it was called the National Football Championship and at that time was held on a regional basis. They changed their name in 1929 when they switched to the current format of "national divisions".

It is considered one of the strongest football championships in Europe. It is mainly sponsored by the Italian telecommunications company, TIM, which is why its official name is Serie A TIM. The first team to win the series was Genoa. Juventus won the most titles (36 official league titles). Followed by Milan (18 titles) and Inter (also 18 titles).

Serie A is third in the UEFA rankings after English Premier League and the La Liga. Paolo Maldini has the most participations in the championship with his 647 appearances in matches. And the top scorer of Serie A is Silvio Piola, who scored 274 goals. The best goalkeeper is Gianluigi Buffon, who holds the record for the series 973 minutes without conceding a goal. And the team with the longest streak without a loss belongs to Milan. They played 58 games between May 26, 1991 and March 21, 1993, without losing.
