Clermont is a French professional football club based in Clermont-Ferrand. For more than 100 years, the burgundy and blue fought for the right to play in the top division and at the end of the 2020/21 season achieved their cherished goal, for the first time in history, having issued a ticket to Ligue 1.

Clermont takes its origins in 1911, but for many years the team performed exclusively at the amateur level and did not achieve any high-profile success. In the 1930s, the burgundy-blue began to progress rapidly and proved to be quite successful in the wartime championship.

Successful performance in the national cup did not help Clermont to stay afloat in the difficult post-war times. The club experienced serious financial problems and at the end of the 1946/47 season was forced to abandon professional status.

After 25 years of playing at the lowest level, the Burgundy and Blues became the winners of the National Amateur Division and joined Ligue 3. However, the team could not advance further, so in 1984 the management decided to merge Clermont with another city club - Montferand. Over time, this bore fruit, and at the end of the 1988/89 season, the burgundy-blues advanced to League 2. But the team failed to gain a foothold in the second division. After suffering a demotion, Clermont hit another financial crisis and in 1990 the club filed for bankruptcy.

Immediately after the fall of the club, former burgundy-blue goalkeeper Alain Dalan won financial support from the city authorities and became president of the newly formed Clermont. The new starting point was 1990, which is considered the official date of the team's founding.

The first half of the 90s was almost unsuccessful for the burgundy-blues, but since 1997 they gained a good move and in the 2002/03 season they already played in League 2. Dalan, who raised Clermont from the very bottom, resigned in 2005, and Claude Misha became the new president of the club.

The change of ownership was hard for Clermont and the club was immediately relegated to the third division. This time, the burgundy-blues avoided another fall and quickly corrected the situation, returning to League 2 next season. Since 2007, Clermont has never left the second division and, 14 years later, has been promoted to Ligue 1.

By far the most significant achievement in the history of Clermont is its debut in Ligue 1 at the end of the 2020/21 season. In addition, the burgundy and blue made some noise in the French Cup, but the team did not make it past the quarterfinals.

The club's top scorer is striker Remy Dugimont, with 44 goals in 179 matches between 2013 and 2018. The record holder of the burgundy-blue in terms of the number of matches played is midfielder Eugene Ecobo, who took part in 255 meetings. The Cameroonian joined Clermont in 2009, where he played until his retirement in 2017.
