Liverpool - Ajax: prediction "1/1"
Certainly few expected Liverpool to start their Champions League campaign with a humiliating defeat. Last week, the English giants were crushed in Naples by Napoli with 1:4. Already in the first half of the game, the Sky Blues had a three-goal lead, with even Victor Osimmen missing a penalty in the middle of the half. The only goal for Liverpool was scored by Luis Diaz, who scored for 4:1.
The Ajax team did not have the problems of its upcoming opponent in the first round of the strongest tournament. Both Napoli and the Dutch side had a three-goal lead in the first 45 minutes. Former Scottish champions Rangers were the team that suffered. First-half goals came from Edson Alvarez, Mohamed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn, who added another in the second hour to make it 4-0.
Liverpool had no chance to bounce back from the heavy defeat at Napoli as the Premier League seventh round was canceled due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Ajax players did not fail to record a monstrous victory again, this time over Heerenveen. Five goals were scored at the Johan Cruyff Arena, with all five coming from the away side. The champions have not failed to win each of the six rounds since the start of the season and are logically number one in the standings, currently two points ahead of Feyenoord.
In 2020, Liverpool and Ajax played the only games against each other as they are again in the group stage of the Champions League. The Merseysiders then won both clashes, finishing 1-0. The now injured Curtis Jones scores the only goal for Liverpool at Anfield. The Eredivisie champions are on a seven-game winning streak in which they have conceded just three goals, but I think that good run will be broken with a loss in the upcoming trip to England. I expect Liverpool to get out of the Champions League groups, so nothing short of a win will do the Merseysiders any favours.
