The Norwegian Premier League is called Eliteserien. It was founded in 1991, before that it was called the Norwegian League, Main League, First Division, etc. Subsequently, the First Division came to be called the second tier in Norwegian football before it was changed to Adeccoligaen due to sponsorship by Adeccoligaen.

Sixteen teams participate in the league. The season runs from March to early November. Each club plays twice (as a host and as a guest) with everyone else.
