Ufa is a Russian professional football club from the capital of the same name of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Until recent years, Ufa could not be called a football city, but in the early 2010s the situation changed and over time, local residents received their representative in the top division of the Russian championship. Playing their home games at Neftyanik stadium (capacity of 15,132 people).
Since the 2014/15 season, the Citizens have been permanent participants in the national championship. Ufa is considered one of the youngest teams in the Premier League, but despite this, it managed to earn the status of a strong middle peasant in the top division, as well as make its debut in European competitions.
The progenitor of modern Ufa was the football club Bashinformsvyaz-Dynamo, which was formed on February 18, 2009 as a result of the merger of the two most powerful local teams - Dynamo and Taxi. A month later, the new club became a member of the PFL Association and received the right to play in the second division.
For two seasons in a row BIS-Dynamo finished in the middle of the standings in the Ural-Povolzhye zone without any prospects for promotion. However, this situation did not suit the local authorities in Ufa, and in the summer of 2010 the President of Bashkortostan Rustem Khamitov announced the need to create a team of the level of the Premier League in the republic. Thus, after the end of the season, a new football club was formed on the basis of BIS-Dynamo, which, as a result of a fan vote, was named Ufa.
During the 2011/12 season, Ufa showed rocking results and the coach frankly did not know how to stabilize the team's game. A striking example of this was the case when Kanchelskis blamed the bad aura at the Dynamo home stadium in the goalless series of Ufa players that lasted for several matches. To correct this situation, a priest was even invited, who conducted a solemn ceremony of consecration of the field and the gate, but the results of the "townspeople" did not improve from this. As a result, Ufa took second place in its division, and Kanchelskis, together with General Director Alexei Oshchepkov, was dismissed.
Ufa is a rather modest club by the standards of the Premier League and does not set sky-high goals for itself. From year to year, the "townspeople" are faced with one main task - not to be relegated from the top division, which they successfully cope with. In addition, the Ufa team played a couple of powerful seasons and made their debut in European competition, which is a serious achievement for such a young team.
Ufa made its debut in the top division in the 2014/15 season. “Citizens” finished on the 12th line in the standings, one point ahead of the Ural, which got into the play-off zone, and 2 points ahead of the relegated Torpedo. The next season turned out to be even harder than the previous one. Before the last round, Ufa took 15th place in the relegation zone, and ahead was a game with Spartak, leading the fight for European cups. It seemed that the “townspeople” could no longer avoid a demotion in the class, but they showed character and beat the Muscovites in a home match with a score of 3: 1. Thanks to misfires of neighbors from the bottom of the standings, this victory allowed Ufa to rise to 12th position and even avoid play-offs.
Ufa seriously entered the struggle to get into the top 6 teams of the championship, but eventually finished in seventh place. Skeptics considered such a club's success to be an accident and a fortunate coincidence, but the Ufa team did not slow down and next year achieved their cherished goal. The Citizens finished the season in a record sixth place in the team's history and won the right to represent their country in the European arena.
In the 2019/20 season, Ufa came to their senses and again entered the fight for European cups, but in the end they finished in ninth place, losing only three points to Dynamo who went to the Europa League. For almost the entire next season, the "townspeople" were balancing in the relegation zone, but in the end they retained their residence in the top division, taking 13th place.
Since the founding of Ufa in 2010, 13 specialists have changed on the coaching bridge of the club. The greatest success in this position was achieved by Sergei Semak, who headed the "townspeople" from 2016 to 2018. Under his leadership, Ufa imposed a serious struggle as the flagship of Russian football and achieved a record sixth place in its history in the Premier League, and also reached the semifinals of the Russian Cup. Such results did not go unnoticed by the more titled Russian clubs. After the triumphant 2017/18 season, Semak received an invitation from Zenit, where he continued his career.
The most productive player in the history of the Citizens is striker Sylvester Igbun, who played for the team from 2015 to 2019. During this period, the forward scored 27 goals in 119 matches.
The largest number of games for the club is on the account of the current defender and captain of Ufa Pavel Alikin. Since 2011, he has played 211 matches with the citizens.
