Atletico Madrid is a football club from the Spanish capital Madrid. It was founded in 1903. Plays their home games at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Two Bulgarians played for Atletico - Lyuboslav Penev (who is the best goal scorer of the team for the 1995/96 season with his 22 goals in 44 games). Another Bulgarian who played for Atletico is Martin Petrov. The nickname of the team is "mattresses" because of the colors of the team - red and white stripes.

The team was founded as the Madrid Athletic Club by students living in Madrid. Joined the Primera Division in 1928, but was relegated to a lower division two seasons later. In the 1939/40 season the club entered Primera Division and in the same season won their first title in the Spanish championship.

They have won the Primera Division a total of 10 times. They have also been La Liga runners-up 9 times. The club won Copa del Rey 10 times, also winners of the Spanish Super Cup, as well as the Intercontinental Cup. In addition, they are winners of the KNK, three-time champions in the Europa League, winners of the Audi Cup and the European Super Cup.

The record holder for the most appearances with the team is Adelardo with 551 games from 1959 to 1976. Adrian Escudero has the most goals for the team in La Liga, scoring 150 goals.

One of the most famous derbies of the club is against Real Madrid. Until recently, Atletico had significant difficulties in the derby, having spent 14 years without a win. But the series ended on May 17, 2013, when Atletico Madrid defeated their rivals 2-1 as a guest in the final of Copa del Rey.
